When planning the Soup Kitchen of Muncie’s Annual Dinner and Auction, its easy to get caught up in the details—what we’re serving, what color the table linens should be, what’s in the cheer raffle. . . But it’s important to remember why we’re gathering on March 24th in the first place: to make sure the Soup Kitchen of Muncie can continue to serve our neighbors who would otherwise go hungry.
We do this because one in six people in our community are food insecure.
That is the third highest rate in Indiana, according to FeedingAmerica.org. Nearly 25,000 people in Delaware County are estimated to fall below the poverty line, according to the US American Community Survey. And so many of our neighbors who do work—and work hard—still struggle to make ends meet enough to reliably feed their families.
The Soup Kitchen of Muncie opened its doors in 1994, and has managed to step up to demand every year since. We served 71,362 meals in 2017, averaging 181 people served each day in the month of July alone. We strive to make the most of our resources and currently, our cost to feed our guests is just $1.16 per meal.
This is only the 8th year we’ve hosted this dinner. But the money we raise with this event has become an integral part of our operating budget. As the word spreads about what we do, and as the needs of the Muncie community grow, your support of this dinner has become crucial to keeping the Soup Kitchen running.
Help us continue serving all our neighbors who are hungry, with dignity and respect.
If you’ve already got your ticket, thank you! If you don’t, get yours now on our Dinner page or at Eventbrite.
