This year we will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary at our Annual Dinner and Auction which will be held at the Horizon Convention Center on March 16, 2019. We need your help since this is our major fundraiser for the year that will allow us to continue to serve the Muncie Community.
At our founding in 1994 and through the 1990s, we served perhaps 50 to 60 visitors a day. In 2018, we served an average of 140 visitors per day and the need is growing. We serve men and women, families with children, people who are homeless, unemployed or underemployed. Much of Muncie is considered a food desert where there is limited access to supermarkets because of their location and the transportation limitations for those who are food insecure. A Muncie census in 2017 estimated that 30.7% of households were at or below the poverty level and that 74.8% of students in the Muncie Community Schools qualify for free or reduced price lunches.
The Soup Kitchen of Muncie plays a significant role in helping those who are food insecure. In 2018, we served 35,354 visitors a total of 70,708 meals since all visitors to the Soup Kitchen receive both a hot meal and a sack lunch. This is increased from a total of 67,728 meals served in 2016.
